Laser hair removal is a cosmetics/medical procedure, which makes use of a laser; a concentrated beam of light, to get rid of unwanted hair by destroying the hair follicles.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Works?

During the procedure, the client is given an eye protector to use, then the certified technician places the laser light on to the area of unwanted hair, the light is converted to heat, and this heat damages the hair follicle which is known to produce hair. This damage delays hair growth for a long time.

Hair growth is usually in 3 phases and the hair has to be in its growth stage for the laser to completely damage the hair follicles.

Unlike what a lot of people think, laser hair removal is not a permanent method of removing hair, it only delays hair growth for a long period.

Benefits Of Using Laser Hair Removal

The following are some of the benefits of laser hair removal;

1. Fast Procedure

On average, the laser hair removal procedure is quite fast, some sessions may take as low as 5 to 10 minutes. This is also dependent on the part of your body that is targeted. I.e it will take a longer time to get rid of hair from your legs than your upper lips.

2. Long-Lasting Results

With laser hair removal, you do not have to worry about getting your hair removed in the next 3-5 months, depending on how fast your hair grows, unlike other traditional means i.e waxing, shaving, etc. You can also be certain that when the hair grows back, it will be lighter, thinner, and less noticeable.

3. You Can Wear What You Want

We understand the struggle that comes with not being able to wear some clothes because of the hair on your skin. After getting the laser hair removal procedure done, you can be certain that you will be able to wear whatever you want, without minding the hair on your skin.

One of the many important questions that should be asked when considering laser hair removal is the question of “ is it safe?” it is important to know how safe a procedure is and what measures to take if it isn’t.

What Are The Side Effects Of Laser Hair Removal?

Here are some side effects you may encounter as a result of undergoing laser hair removal. They vary and depends generally on the subject.

1. Irritation

Because of the damages to the hair follicles, during the laser hair removal procedure, the body reacts in different ways and many people experience irritation or redness in some of the places worked on. There may be swelling or tingling feelings. Irritation should leave some hours after the session. You can also make use of ice to cool the swelling and redness.

 2. Crusting

Crusting is also one of the side effects experienced. It is usually minor, however, it can lead to scarring or scabbing. The use of moisturizers on the affected area can prevent any lasting effect.

3. Color Changes

You may also experience some color changes, your skin may get darker or lighter after the laser hair removal procedure. People with dark skin may experience a slight lightening of the skin and people with lighter skin may find parts of their skin getting darker. These changes are temporary and should be gone after some time.

4. Eye Injury

The technician and the client are at risk of eye injury if both of them do not make use of an eye protector for their eyes, during the session.

Final Thoughts

Laser hair removal is safe for almost anyone to do, there is no proven evidence that laser hair removal can cause cancer.

The side effects of laser hair removal also differ from person to person. You must consult your dermatologist before beginning the process and also inform them if you are experiencing any discomfort or irritation.
